Here at Warthen RV Park, we love a full hookup as much as the next camper—but there’s something to be said for getting comfortable with dry camping (aka boondocking). Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting out, here are the top three reasons you should add dry camping to your RV skill set.
⸻
1. Be Prepared in Case of a Breakdown
Life on the road is full of surprises. If your RV breaks down somewhere remote (or even in a spot without hookups), knowing how to manage your power, water, and waste without relying on hookups can be a real lifesaver. Practicing dry camping helps you build confidence so you’re not caught off guard when challenges pop up.

2. Expand Your Horizons & Enjoy More Places
Some of the most beautiful, off-the-beaten-path spots don’t have full amenities. When you’re comfortable dry camping, your world opens up. You can stay in national forests, on BLM land, or at friend’s properties—and really enjoy the quiet, rugged charm of nature. Plus, you’ll meet plenty of other campers who love the freedom of boondocking too!
⸻
3. Save Money on Your Travels
Let’s be real: RVing can get pricey, especially if you’re always paying for full-service sites. Dry camping gives your wallet a break—you can often stay for free or at a low cost on public lands, fairgrounds, or event spaces. Learning to dry camp can stretch your travel budget, letting you stay on the road longer (or splurge on other adventures).
